An excursion for youth

On November 3, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic organized an excursion to Ordubad for a group of talented and active young people working in the Youth Organization culture system.

Participants of the excursion organized on the basis of the Ministry’s work plan were first acquainted with the Ordubad History-Ethnography Museum and then the Juma Mosque.

The museum’s guide informed young people that the opening of the historical monument Geysariyya in which Ordubad Region History-Ethnography Museum is situated, was held on January 14, 2011.

It was reported that Geysariyya building which consists of a big dome and 16 small domes adjacent to it, was built in a beautiful architectural style. The monument, dated to the seventeenth century, was built of baked bricks, and its height is 8.5 meters. Roof of the building was repaired, network system in 200 square meters, internal walls were restored. The interior was decorated with decorative bricks, fund room, work rooms for the museum staff were created, and the lighting system fitted to the exposition hall. The functioning of the Ordubad History-Ethnography Museum in this building has further increased the importance of the monument. Today, the visitors of the museum learn about Ordubad’s history, culture, literature, people’s occupation, the outstanding personalities of this land throughout the exhibits in the museum, and also get acquainted with the historical monument Geysariyya.

It was noted that the Ordubad Region History-Ethnography Museum operates in this building since 1991. More than 4,000 exhibits are preserved in the museum, which began functioning with 150 exhibits. The oldest exhibits are Gamigaya granite stones belonging to II-I Millennium BC, and 32 copies of the Koran were manually written. There are ancient numismatics, money samples in the museum. The exhibit with Kufu-God words on the stone on the illustration of a young girl draws attention

The cradle with a special bowl to prevent children to wet their beds and the largest furnace that drives the smoke are in this museum. There is also a Belled box. A man named Arbub, a rich man from Ordubad, brought it from France to keep his precious possessions. Several exhibits belonging to wealthy Arbub are kept in the museum. The pendulum clock was also his personal use. It is said that each time the clock chimed, its voice went up to Siyali village of South Azerbaijan.

Then the excursion participants visited Juma Mosque.

It was noted that the medieval architectural monument was erected at the highest point of the city’s central square. On the stone board on the eastern door of the Juma Mosque, I Shah Abbas’s five-line decree in Persian on Ordubad people’s tax exemption was engraved.

It was emphasized that the plan structure, elements and artistic design of the mosque show that its original foundation is older. It is supposed the mosque was restored in the XVII century.  Geometrical ornaments in the walls of the mosque are reminiscent of the drawings in Nakhchivan’s ancient monuments. According to some sources, it was understood from the writing in a brick found during the 1902-1903 mosque’s renovation that its foundation was laid in Hijri 111 (729 AD). At present, the mosque has a madrasah in the north-east and zorkhana (playground for wrestlers) in the west. Mosques and surrounding buildings were restored in 1987.
