On the occasion of the 28th anniversary of the 20 January tragedy, an interactive connection was established between the Memorial Museum in Nakhchivan and the secondary schools of the autonomous republic on January 19.
Ayten Gasimova, director of the museum, said that there are about 2,000 exhibits in the museum, and about 400 of them are displayed at the exposition. From the beginning of the last century, traces of the horrible crimes committed by aggressive Armenian dashnaks against the Azerbaijanis in different years were reflected in these exhibits. The museum, where the memory of those killed in the battle for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Azerbaijan is perpetuated, contains photographs of martyrs, their personal documents, and materials on their combat activities. At the same time, the museum exhibits books about different periods of our heroic history.
It was noted that the Memorial Museum is rich in exhibits reflecting the mass genocide acts committed against Azerbaijanis in 1905-1907, 1918-1920, as well as the deportation of Azerbaijanis from their ancestral lands in 1948-1953, 20 January 1990, Khojaly tragedies in 1992. In the museum, there are valuable books, documents and pictures reflecting the genocide committed by Armenians in Baku, Shamakhi, Garabagh, Nakhchivan and other regions.
Every year on the eve of the 20 January tragedy, one of the places which Nakhchivan residents address is the Memorial Museum in Nakhchivan city.
For information, the name of Martyrs’ Museum established on the basis of the Decree of the Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Mr. Vasif Talibov in 1997, began functioning with 500 exhibits, was renamed as “Memorial Museum” on August 8, 2000. Now this museum preserves nearly 2000 exhibits. Each exhibit takes us to the past. They remember us the bloody crimes committed against us in the beginning of the last century. They suggest us not to forget these incidents. Nearly 400 exhibits are exhibited at the exposition. Chronological sequence is the main factor in the establishment of museum exposition. The copies of decrees signed by the national leader Heydar Aliyev related to the tragedies March 31, 1918, January 20, 1990, February 26, 1992 are kept as valuable documents in the museum. These documents are of great importance as an expression of great respect for the glorious history of our people by the national leader.
This is the corner of the exposition covering the years. It is impossible to look at them without excitement. One can see the materials, photos and documents reflecting the tragedies perpetrated by the Armenian dashnaks against Azerbaijan people in the years 1918-1920. In those years the Armenian invaders attacked our settlements, slaughtered them and killed the people with special cruelty. At that time, Armenians killed only 70,000 people in Baku. The Armenian bandits led by Andranik also attacked Nakhchivan. Yaycı village was completely burned, and the people were in a state of disrepair. In total, 73 thousand 727 people were killed in Nakhchivan.
28 years passed since 20 January tragedy. Those painful days have been engraved in the memory of each of our citizens forever. This date, along with the tragedy of a nation, was the day of the first pinnacle of the independence of Azerbaijan, the national aspiration, our desire for freedom.
An event dedicated to "National Mourning Day" was held in Julfa District Culture House on 19 January. Before the beginning of the event, the souls of our martyrs who died for the integrity of Azerbaijan were commemorated with a minute of silence. Parvin Hasanov, Head of the Culture and Tourism Department of the region, stated that the transfer of Armenians to the South Caucasus, especially to the Azerbaijani lands according to the Gulustan and Turkmenchay treaties, and their protection by the Russian Empire laid the foundations for the tragedies against Azerbaijanis. For a century, massacres and deportations have been committed by offensive enemies and their supporters.
Irada Abdullayeva, a teacher at the secondary school number 2 in Julfa city, spoke about "January 20" events.
