National clothes

In the ancient times, women clothes of Nakhchivan usually preferred red-brown, green, and silvery colors. The colors in the clothes were selected in detail according to their harmony. If the elements of clothes were sewed of flowery fabrics, by all means, full and gentle colors were selected. The clothes prepared of gentle designs, zanjiralar and shah-pasandalar, beady sewing, screw metals, and in general, using all sewing techniques, though were rather rich and beautiful, but to take wholly, the set of clothes made a border between the person and environment with its seriousness.

The borders of drawers were designed with special taste. Mainly silvery and beady sewing were used. All sewing lines of the jackets and kulachas were sewed with gentle designs. Mainly, laces were used for this purpose.

When used the beady sewing technique, mainly the botanic designs were used. The cut of the Nakhchivan clothes is simple. Usually the sleeves were cut straightly. The cut and sewing technology of shirts and drawers were the same with other regions. Only the arkhaligs (jacket) were differed a bit for their forms. The collar projection of the jackets is the same with the chargan. If the jacket (it is called kulacha) is long, it is cut in the waist, but if short, it is cut wholly as in charkan; however, this time, the section and fabric projection are sewed in the sides. The fore collars of the long sleeved, armlet jackets were far from each other which the distance was soluted with rich sinabands, sarmas, gardens, and others. The breast decorations of rich women were ordered from jaw to waist. In cold weather the sleeves of the arkhalig were buttoned and a kulacha was put over it. In order not to commit a problem, the armlet was rolled up from the wrist. You see, for this, the armlet was sewed with rich designs on its backside.

The neatness of a manual work and its systematism of the Nakhchivan clothes predict of high technology. Some women clothes set about Nakhchivan are defended in the Azerbaijan State History Museum. Though the names of some women clothes are the same, they are differed for their sewing and design elements. Usually, arkhalig was sewed of satiny with lining. There is a section of 10cm in the sides and fabric projection. The sleeves are sewed straight and they are long. The sleeve ends and side sections are bordered with golden lace. Kulacha is a seasonable woman shoulder clothes with stitch and lining in the territory of Nakhchivan. It was cut with a straight sleeve and a bit lower the elbow, with open breast. It was designed very rich along the side and sewing linings. The kulacha, mainly sewed of velvet and tafata fabrics, was designed the same with the sleeve of the over drawers. Different kinds of sewing techniques-gulabatin, malima, bafta, laced, garagoz, sarma, beady, scaly filling, and others were used for decoration. There were different kinds of drawers.

The sleeve of the drawers was designed with screw silver, lacy, fine beads, and scales. The women in Nakhchivan used 2 kerchiefs of simple scales. But in rich families, the skull-caps substituted the under kerchief. In simple families over the kerchief on the head a silk kerchief was put on. Usually, the designed skull-caps or gold-silver hoods were used in rich families. The head scarf was fastened with expensive hair pins to them. In the families of this category, the throat usually was covered with the suspended silsila, but not with kerchief. This time, the fine kerchief fastened to the hood or back was easily thrown backside. The following Nakhchivan male clothes were the same with other regions of Azerbaijan as: arkhalig, gushgar, trousers, chukha, sheepskin coat, felt-cloak, skin, and felt and head clothes made of different fabrics, such as caps, tashkulah, painted cap and others.
