ORDUBAD is the home preserving modernity and history

Ordubad region is distinguished for its ancient history and unique nature in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. Thanks to construction and renovation work, this place changes its appearance, become more beautiful day by day, and lives a new era of construction. The city center located at the foot of the Zangazur Mountains is not only a modern Azerbaijan city of the Caucasus but also the East and Eurasia.

National leader Heydar Aliyev called Ordubad “The pearl of Azerbaijan”. It is also known not only for its natural beauty, relief, flora and fauna, but also with its ancient history of places and places of interest, from the point of view of high culture, spiritual heritage.

When we visit Ordubad, cool springs, kahrizs coming from Gapijig Mountain, the highest peak of the Small Caucasus mountains range, the snowy Soyug, Ajnovur, Balka mountains, “Shikhi yurdu”, “Gurban yurdu” and “Salabun” through “Zavvar” aryk, clean mountain air, abundant fruit gardens, newly planted trees on the roadside, sown areas, architectural monuments built in ancient Eastern style inspire us very much.

As you move towards the center of the city, it is impossible not to fall in the attraction of modernity and historical beauty here. When we move forward to the central street, the first thing we observe is the new plane trees planted on the roadsides, which want to join the elderly ones. Ordubad has been famous for its centuries-old plane trees from ancient times. It is possible to see plant trees not only in the city of Ordubad, but also in the villages of the region. Today, the shadow of those plane trees is one of the rest- place of Ordubad’s residents and guests talking and drinking tea. Ordubad is also distinguished for its hospitality. Hundreds of tourists come here every year from Iran, Turkey, Russia and other countries. The beauty of Ordubad's nature, the combination of history and modernity encourages tourists to visit this beautiful place. Regarding the geographical position of the region, it is possible to watch the snowy mountains on the one hand, on the other side the natural landscape surrounded with green leaves in the summer and yellow leaves in the autumn, tumultuous rivers, the flowing waterfalls murmuring.

Ordubad is also an unique place that it is impossible not to talk about its historical past when talking about it. Because, the loyalty, infrequency to its past is a key indicator of Ordubad's modern development. Ordubad has been famous for its historical monuments, which have been traditionally styled by ancient Oriental architectural traditions, rich national ornaments, and unique architectural style. Historical and architectural monuments of Azerbaijan's history, culture, folklore, in other words, the unique means of expression of national heritage and thought system prove Ordubad’s urban culture dating back to the Middle Ages as well. Today, Ordubad has been increasingly focused on with the introduction of advanced urban planning practices and reconstruction. Today, in Ordubad, where advanced urban planning practices are being applied, many modern buildings are built every year, the historical and architectural monuments are in the focus of the attention. The construction work carried out here is based on the city's main architectural style, and historical monuments are restored. As a result of the synthesis of the Eastern and European architecture, a modern city has been created preserving its ancient appearance. Modern historical and architectural monuments, including the Ordubad temple and modern monuments, give the town a special beauty.

Ordubad was also one of the cities where ancient craftsmanship developed. Throughout history, various craftsmanship fields have been formed. It also allowed the city to become an important craftsmanship center. There are various historic buildings, including kahrizs, underground water lines which allow the population to regularly supply water, mosques and squares with the elements of Eastern architecture. Historical monuments in the city have been improved and renewed as a result of the implemented renovation work.

Ordubad occupies one of the leading places according to the number of archeological and architectural monuments in Azerbaijan. These monuments are exceptional examples of architectural art, construction techniques, and are beautiful art works as well.

Here are the findings of the Kharaba Gilan of II and I millenniums B.C, the Gamigaya rock paintings of the III century B.C, Kilit Cave of the Middle Ages,   the   Mingis and “Jame” mosques of XIV century, Monument of Geysariyya-Zorkhana of the XVII Century, Sarshahar, Takeshiyi, Uchturlanga mosques of the XVIII century, Ordubad Bath of XIX century, Ice-house,  Pir Eyvaz Tomb (XVIII)     also show that the cultural life of the city was very rich in ancient times. These monuments are the historical memory of our great past. The "Juma" mosque for 7 thousand people in the center of Ordubad city surprises the guests of the city as an ancient architectural monument.

The monuments and museums that preserve our history, culture and national heritage attract the attention of tourists in Ordubad today. One of the places where every foreign guest visits in the region is the History- Ethnography Museum which makes a great impression about Ordubad. At present, at the museum where more than 4000 exhibits have been collected, the works of national craftsmen, applied art samples and archaeological findings discovered in the region are of particular importance. Here you can get detailed information about the history of Ordubad and get acquainted with historical exhibits preserving history.

While visiting there, the museum guide reported that the History- Ethnography Museum of  Ordubad began operating in 1981 with 150 exhibits. From May 1990, the museum is operating in the Geysariyya-Zorkhana building, a monument of the XVII century. “Geysariyya” means a covered “East Market”, which was used to sell jewelry belonging to shahs in the past. There are 15 corners at the History-Ethnography Museum located at Geysariyya Monument. Here, stone tools used by primitive men, Gamigaya granite stones belonging to the III-I millenniums B.C, handicrafts of Ordubad’s blacksmith and various exhibits are exhibited. First of all, the exposition hall attracts the visitors of the museum. Foreign guests coming here get acquainted with our ancient history, culture, art, intelligentsia of this land and their activities. The number of tourists visiting the museum is increasing year by year.

After the restoration of our independence, in this ancient region, the objects reflecting the history of modern era have been established. Roads, bridges have been built, energy, communications and water infrastructure has been renewed. The bus station, airplane ticket office which meet the modern requirements have been put into operation in the city.

The establishment and restoration of house museums of scholars and writers are also kept in focus in Ordubad. The construction or reconstruction of the house-museums of academician, world-renowned scientist Yusif Mammadaliyev who made great discoveries in the field of chemistry and served invaluable services in the military industry development in the war of 1941-1945, one of the founders of the historical novel Mammad Said Ordubadi and the prominent educator, educationist and poet Mahammad Tagi Sidgi, is one of the most obvious examples of our state care for our cultural heritage. These renovations are also being continued today. Ordubad is developing day by day and preserves its place in other regions.
