Today, 135 years have passed since the birth of poet-playwright Husein Javid, one of the prominent representatives of Azerbaijani classical literature. Every year, October 24, is celebrated as “Husein Javid Poetry Day” in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic on the basis of the “Action Plan for the holding the 125th anniversary of Husein Javid in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic”, approved by the Order of the Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic dated May 15, 2007.

Husein Javid received his first education in a religious school   in Nakhchivan, studied Arabic-Persian languages, gained preliminary knowledge about Oriental literature. Later, Husein Javid who continued his education at “Tarbiya” school established by the initiative of M.T.Sidgi, studied secular sciences and began to write his first poems by pseudonym “Gulchin”. After graduating from the Istanbul University (1906-1909), which was an important stage in the development of his outlook, he began teaching in Nakhchivan in 1909-1910. Huseyn Javid, who went to Tbilisi in 1911, lived here until 1917 and continued his literary-pedagogical activity. In 1918-1919, he taught at the “Rushdiyya” school in Nakhchivan.

Husein Javid wrote in his own heart what he wrote throughout his creative career. The writer said that if there is anything that I am fond of, it is true and again true. The general analysis of the poet’s creative way, the artistic perfection and the moral richness of his images, indicate that this literary confession is absolutely true. Source of inspiration of the writer who had extremely complicated life and creativity was the love of truth. The poet who sought the truth, hesitated to find the truth never tried to leave his own ideal - the truth, by the means of all the incidents in his works and  romantic images throughout his creative career he conveyed it to people  and  showed the difficult ways of truth. The great writer, who devoted his whole life to this great act, had only one desire: to see his native people free and happy, to serve his homeland. Natioanal leader Heydar Aliyev, describing Huseyn Javid’s creative work said: “All the creativity and activity of Husein Javid consisted of raising the culture of the Azerbaijani people, making our people free and independent. All his creativity urged the Azerbaijani people to national liberty and independence. He always lived by his own will, committed to his will and nation, was a human being who loved his nation and  people and served the nation extensively”.

Hussein Javid is a great writer  who does not resemble his predecessors and followers in our literature in terms of his art, views and creative fate. The images created by Husein Javid who was very talented, kind-hearted, great playwright, are the alive galleries of unique and inimitable human characters. Poet’s “At girls’ school”, “Man of the East”, “Novruz holiday”, “Tuberculosis girl”, “Sea mermaid”, “Leave”, “Neighbour’s flower”, “I would like that”, “I did not notice”, “In front of the god of war”, “One memory”, “Against the sunset” poems, “Azer” play and ”Abyss”, “Mother”, “Maral”, “Sheikh Sanan”, “Afat”, “Timur”, “The Satan”, “Knyaz”, “Khayyam”, “Sayavush”, “Sheyda”, “The prophet” and other monumental works were included in the gold fund of Azerbaijan romantic literature.

His philosophical and historical tragedies, as well as family-style dramas, have a strong impact on the development of the national theater culture, creating a new stage in the Azerbaijani drama in terms of style, writing, form of innovation. His dramaturgy reflects the problems of universal, major socio-political and cultural significance of the era. He is the first Azerbaijani writer who staged poem. The images created by the great playwright- Sheikh Sanan, Satan, Azer, Amir Timur, Khayyam, Sayavush, Afrasiyab and others, have become eternal in our literature with their uniqueness, indifference and attraction. These images are eternal to create the perfect imagination of the world in the background of the collision of life and human, time  and enviroment, idea and thoughts.

In June, 1937 Husein Javid was arrested for eight years on the pretext of his participation in the “secret nationalistic counter-revolutionary organization”. He was exiled to Magadan in 1938-1940, the most remote and coldest camp in the former USSR. Huseyn Javid, who died in the exile in the Shevchenko settlement in Tayshet district in Siberian region on December 5, 1941, thinking about his personality and creativity and the high appreciation given to him we remember a thought by the late Turan khanum, the daughter of the writer: “I believe my father’s true acquittal was in July 1981 after the decision on the 100th anniversary of Husein Javid. It was the triumph of justice. For this, first of all, I am grateful to Heydar Aliyev, the great son of the Azerbaijani people”.

This decision, adopted with the initiative and guidance of the national leader, was an important event in our culture and literature as a striking example of the high value given to the great poet and playwright at the state level. National leader Heydar Aliyev took a step that required great courage, Javid’s funeral was brought  from Far Siberia to Baku in November 1982 and to Nakhchivan on November 2. This fact is the only courageous example of the state-level attitude towards the repressed person in the former Soviet Union. From the beginning of the 70s of the last century Javid’s works were published and 2 volumes were published in Russian. The jubilee events of the great writer in the cities and regions of Azerbaijan were organized, his works were staged in theaters of our republic, streets, schools, libraries were named after him.

On October 23, 1992, the 110th anniversary of Husein Javid was celebrated in Nakhchivan. National leader Heydar Aliyev who worked as the Chairman of the  Supreme Majlis in Nakhchivan at that time, delivered a profound speech about Husein Javid at the jubilee event and touched upon a number of issues related to immortalize the memory of the great writer. The prominent statesman Heydar Aliyev always thought and cared for Javid’s personality, heritage and family. On June 10, 1995, at the meeting held with the national leader Heydar Aliyev, issues related to the establishment of prominent poet-playwright Husein Javid’s tomb and house-museum were discussed.

One of the great wishes of the great leader was realized on October 29, 1996. On that day there was a solemn opening of the tomb of the great playwright in Nakhchivan. Speaking at the solemn ceremony, national leader praised the great writer: “Huseyn Javid is one of the great personalities who elevates the people of Azerbaijan, its culture, literature and science. The works created by Husein Javid are the national wealth of the Azerbaijani people. They are a textbook for future generations today”. Holding of jubilees of Husein Javid in Azerbaijan, becoming a real poetry festival is the result of the great leader’s value to art. Holding these jubilees has already become a tradition. Preparation of the book “Through the life of Javid”, publication of his works in mass circulation, shooting documentary films, TV performances, staging his plays in various theaters of our country is part of care to Husein Javid’s heritage. Writing numerous research works and monographs about Husein Javid in recent years is an indication of interest to the creativity of the great poet.  

Over time, the interest to Husein Javid’s heritage grows.  The Order dated 2007 “On the 125th Anniversary of Husein Javid”, signed by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, who successfully continued the path of the Great Leader , as well as the Order “On holding Husein Javid’s 130th jubilee” dated February 16, 2012 is the next state care to Husein Javid’s creativity. The decree states: “Husein Javid created a new stage in our literature with his deep philosophical-aesthetically creative work. Lyric works, which are the expression of the poet’s search for the spiritual life of humanity on the basis of world romantic traditions, tragedies and historical dramas have a decent place in our people’s rich thought treasury.

By the Order of the Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic dated February 20, 2012 “Action Plan for the Holding of the 130th Anniversary of Husein Javid in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic” was approved. According to the Action Plan, a symposium in connection with the 130th anniversary of Husein Javid was held,  “Sheikh Sanan” was staged  at Nakhchivan State Musical Drama Theater, one edition of  “Nakhchivan” magazine was dedicated to the anniversary of the writer, series of events were held. Scientific conferences were organized in the Nakhchivan Branch of ANAS, higher educational institutions and cultural institutions, the life and creativity of the great writer was highlighted in the mass media.

Husein Javid’s art and personality are still living today.  “The Satan” tragedy of the prominent writer was performed in the 135th season of Nakhchivan State Musical Drama Theater on the occasion of 135th anniversary of Husein Javid. All of this once again shows that the study and promotion of Husein Javid creativity is in the center of attention in Nakhchivan, where he was born. Husein Javid’s art is the key to perfection and enrichment of every man’s world. The art that purifies the human heart, raises the mind of the human being and raises the spiritual life is always eternal. As the Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of  Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Mr. Vasif Talibov said: “Whatever Husein Javid wrote was for Azerbaijan, for the Azerbaijani reader, for the people of Azerbaijan. Nationalism, patriotism, Azerbaijanism is in the spirit and blood of his creativity. Javid’s poetry language is purely Azerbaijani-Turkish. Regardless of the subject of Husein Javid’s works and the period or environment of his hero, the ideas presented in these works, first of all, are aimed  understanding the Azerbaijani reader himself, learning the history of the country, its national values, and cultural heritage
