In the frame of tour-campaign “Let’s discover our country”, schoolchildren from Nakhchivan got acquainted with "Ateshgah temple" State Historical-Architectural Reserve in Baku on March 17.
Schoolchildren were welcomed here in the holiday atmosphere - music, dance and Novruz khonchas (holiday trays filled with dry fruits, sweets, candles and so on).
The students were in detail informed about the history of this ancient monument. It was noted that “Ateshgah temple”, located in the territory of Surakhani district, 30 km away from Baku, is known all over the world. Ancient Zoroastrian fire-worshippers temple was located in this area in ancient times. Fire-worshippers who give a mysterious importance to the eternal flame came here to worship the holy fire.
In the XV-XVII centuries, fire-worshipper Hindoos visited Surakhani, who came to Absheron with trade caravans. Hindoo merchants built new buildings in the place of the ancient temple. The earliest building of the “Ateshgah temple” is dated to 1713. In the XVIII century, a temple, cells, a caravansary were built around the temple.
It was emphasized that since September 2012, with the support of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, the adjacent territories have been renovated and the auxiliary buildings have been constructed. At present, the doors of the ancient fire-worshiping temple are open to visitors and attract tourists from all over the world.
Then Nakhchivan pupils visited the Dendrology Institute of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.
The students were informed that the arboretum in Mardakan settlement was the personal garden of oil millionaire Murtuza Mukhtarov from 1895 to 1920. The schoolchildren who got acquainted with the house of Murtuza Mukhtarov were informed that the building was designed in the form of "gothic" style. The width of the walls is 1 meter and the height is 8 meters. The balconies of the buildings remind the ship's decks on all sides.
The schoolchildren were informed that the total area of the arboretum is 24 hectares. According to the number and age of species of flora grown there, the Mardakan arboretum is at the level of the world's richest collections.
