The 100th anniversary of Gara Garayev

On February 16, the 100th anniversary of world-famous composer Gara Garayev was celebrated at the Nakhchivan State Musical Drama Theater named after Jalil Mammadguluzade.

Natavan Gadimova, the Minister of Culture and Tourism of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic said at the event that in February 2018, it was the 100th anniversary of the prominent representative of Azerbaijani culture, great composer, People's Artist of the USSR, Hero of Socialist Labor, USSR and Azerbaijan State Prize laureate, academician Gara Garayev. On October 17, 2017, President Ilham Aliyev signed an Order on "100th anniversary of outstanding Azerbaijani composer Gara Garayev". According to the order, the jubilee of the outstanding composer is celebrated in our country with various cultural events.

It was stated that "The Seven Beauties" based on the same-name poem by great Nizami Ganjavi, "The Path of Thunder" ballet based on the same-name novel of South African writer Peter Abrahams, "Elegance" mono-opera on the basis of the novel of French writer Henri Barbusse, "I loved you" and "On the hills of Georgia" romances composed to Alexander Pushkin's poems, "Heart's Song", "Song of happiness" cantatas, and "Cilghin Qaskoniyali" musical on the basis of "Sirano de Berjerac" comedy by French actor Edmond Rostand, and other works will always be remembered and loved.

The minister said that Gara Garayev is an indispensable composer in the development of modern Azerbaijani music culture. He became the creator of a new national composing school in our music history. His works that have specific, deep philosophical content and high professionalism have gained great popularity not only in Azerbaijan but also in the former Soviet Union, and even in the US, England, France, Germany, Egypt, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania and other countries. They still play a decent place in the repertoire of concert programs and musical theaters.

Yashar Khalilov, the Chairman of the Composers' Union of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Honored Art Worker said in his speech on "Gara Garayev's Schooling" that the composer's creative schooling is as universal as national. His specific, unique style always attracts attention. He was also an irreplaceable innovator. All works of the composer are original and modern for both today and future.

In the artistic part of the event there was a concert consisted of the works of great composer performed by the chorus collective and the Chamber and Folk Instruments Orchestra of the Nakhchivan State Philharmonic. People's Artist Chingiz Akhundov is the art director and chief conductor of the Chamber Orchestra. It was performed samples of composer's "Don Quixote" symphonic engravings, "The Path of Thunder", "Seven beauties" and other works.

The Folk Instruments Orchestra of Nakhchivan State Philharmonic performed musical pieces in various genres and the conductors was Elman Aliyev, Honored Artist of the Azerbaijan Republic and Samir Asgarov. The performances of soloists Gulyanag Farzaliyeva, Honored Artist of the Azerbaijan Republic, Elchin Nagiyev, Honored Artist of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and Rahim Askerzade were welcomed.

The concert ended with the composer's "Great Savior" cantata by the choirmaster Mahira Asgarova, the Honored Teacher of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
