The 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in Nakhchivan

On May 16, 2017, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Ilham Aliyev signed a Decree on celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. According to the Decree of the Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic dated January 25, 2018, "Action Plan on holding the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic" was approved.

An event dedicated to the 100th jubilee of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was held in the main square of Nakhchivan - in front of Heydar Aliyev Museum on May 28.

Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Vasif Talibov attended the jubilee event.

The National Anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan was sung.

Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of  Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, Vasif Talibov, congratulated the participants of the event, the population of the autonomous republic, and the staff of the Azerbaijan Armed Forces in the territory of the autonomous republic which is the guarantor of our independence on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and said: We celebrate the independence day in a remarkable period. According to the Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated January 10, 2018, this year – 2018 was proclaimed as the "Year of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic". The Decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on holding the 100th jubilee of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic states: "The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic emerged as a logical conclusion of the cultural progress of Azerbaijan when the political order of the world was restored".

The Chairman of the Supreme Majlis said: Azerbaijan Democratic Republic is a glorious page of the history of our people. Though existing for only 23 months, the glorious path passed by our national government created an important political and historical foundation for future independent statehood. Our nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev appreciate great importance of the role of the first national Azerbaijani state in our political history: "The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was an indicator of the level of political consciousness, intellectual and cultural potential of our people, high talent and abilities. The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was an example of a new state and society that combines the democratic values ​​of Europe with the features of Eastern culture".

The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic emerged as a result of the struggle for independence in the early XX century. The Declaration of Independence adopted at the historic meeting of the National Council on May 28, 1918 stated that Azerbaijan was a fully independent state, covering the South-Eastern Transcaucasia. The Government of the Democratic Republic honorably fulfilled its missions in difficult historical period, the first national parliament and government, the state apparatus and the national army of Azerbaijan were formed, national statehood attributes - flag, anthem and coat of arms were created, the Azerbaijani language was declared state language, money and postage stamps were released. Significant decisions were made on the development of the national economy, education, health and culture.

The Chairman of the Supreme Majlis said: "While talking about the place and role of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in the history of our statehood, it is necessary to pay special attention to its relations with Nakhchivan. Because at that time, Nakhchivan was the area of conflict of different interests both internal and external. The attacks of Armenians on Nakhchivan made the situation even more complicated. Therefore, the government and the parliament of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic paid attention to a number of issues related to Nakhchivan, and the diplomatic representatives of the government in Iravan and Tbilisi worked efficiently and effectively on this issue. But the reality was that the existing political and international situation did not allow the Nakhchivan people to realize their desire to be united with Azerbaijan. The territory of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic was isolated and the connection with the main territory of Azerbaijan was interrupted after the transfer of ancient Azerbaijan lands, Zangazur and Iravan to Armenia by the pressure of big powers. In such a situation, the Araz Turkish Republic, established in Nakhchivan in November 1918, prevented the annulment of Nakhchivan by the Armenian Dashnak government and preserved historical Azerbaijani lands. The organized political will of the people of Nakhchivan on protection of this territory and the position of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic in this issue were crucial for Nakhchivan for the next period to gain autonomy status within Azerbaijan.

It was noted that one of the most important services of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was the restoration of independent, entire Azerbaijan statehood in the territory of ancient khanates of 113 thousand square kilometers. For this, the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan was preserved during and after the Bolshevik occupation of 28 April 1920, the independent Azerbaijan state was established in this territory in 1991. After outstanding state figure Heydar Aliyev returned power in our country in 1993, our state independence more strengthened. Democratic principles were established in our country, powerful army was created, our independence gained immortal character. Azerbaijan proved that Azerbaijan, the first democratic state in the East and Islamic world, is the successor of Democratic Republic, its follower and loyal to its traditions. As the visual expression of the successor, in 1998, the 80^th anniversary of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was marked and in 2008, the 90^th anniversary was marked in the republic at a high level, Memorial monument was erected to Democratic Republic, scientific-researches were conducted related to the history of republic, jubilee editions were carried out.

The Chairman of the Supreme Majlis said: One of the most important services of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic is today’s independent and powerful Azerbaijan. The independence way defined by national leader Heydar Aliyev is the statehood way of modern Azerbaijan, the successor of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. The President of the country Mr. Ilham Aliyev continued this way successfully, turned Azerbaijan leader country in the region, provider of peace, stability and development. Today, the independent Republic of Azerbaijan, as a political heir of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, occupies a worthy place in the world community. Our nation's support for the national leader Heydar Aliyev's political line in the presidential elections held on April 11, 2018 once again reaffirmed that there is no alternative to the path of independence and democracy in Azerbaijan today. Our people support this way and display loyalty. We are proud to be living in an independent country, to be Azerbaijani!

Then a march was held on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. The march started with regular steps of “Flag” group carrying the state flag of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Students of Heydar Aliyev Military Lyceum, active youth of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, the New Azerbaijan Party Youth Union named after Heydar Aliyev, soldiers of Detached Army Troops, “Nakhchivan” Detached Border Division, Nakhchivan Detached Operation Brigade,   exemplary units of the Civil Defense Alliance of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, as well as the cavalry group of the Nakhchivan Detached Operation Brigade  started march in front of the Heydar Aliyev Museum to the Heydar Aliyev Palace and to the back by the solemn march performed by the Military Orchestra.

Thousands of residents watched the march.
